Opal Care

Ethiopian opals are beautiful but requires careful handling to maintain their luster and prevent damage.

Here are some care tips for Ethiopian opals:

Ethiopian opals are hydrophane, meaning they can absorb water. When exposed to water, they may temporarily lose their color or become translucent. To prevent this, avoid wearing your opal jewelry while swimming, bathing, or in humid environments.

Chemicals found in cleaning products, perfumes, and cosmetics can damage the opal's surface. Always remove your opal jewelry before applying any of these substances.

Store Ethiopian opals in a soft cloth or padded jewelry box away from harder gemstones that can scratch them.

Keep them in a cool, dry place, as excessive heat or sudden temperature changes can cause cracking.

Avoid knocking or dropping the opal, as it can crack or chip easily. When cleaning, use a soft cloth rather than ultrasonic cleaners or steamers, which can be too harsh.

Jewelry care

Store your jewelry dry and separately. Avoid perfume, lotions, salt water and household chemicals. Gently polish silver with a soft jewelry cloth after wear.

Ring size guide

A well fitting ring should feel secure without being tight. It should slide over your knuckle with a little resistance and sit comfortably at the base of your finger.

Measure a ring you already own

  1. Choose a ring that fits the intended finger well.
  2. Place it on a ruler and measure the inside diameter from one inner edge to the other.
  3. Record the measurement in millimetres and find the closest match in the chart below.

Measure your finger

  1. Wrap a narrow strip of paper or a non stretch thread around the base of your finger.
  2. Mark the point where the ends meet. The fit should be comfortable and able to pass over your knuckle.
  3. Lay the paper or thread flat and measure the length in millimetres.
  4. Use the circumference column in the chart to find your size.

Metric ring size is based on the inside diameter of the ring. For example, an inside diameter of approximately 17 mm corresponds to ring size 17.

  • Avoid measuring when your hands are very cold or swollen.
  • Measure two or three times for a more reliable result.
  • If you are between sizes, choose the larger size.
  • Wider bands often feel tighter, so you may prefer one size larger.
